Living in a world where endlessly scrolling through feeds and engaging with posts has become the norm, I have made a bold decision - I am saying goodbye to social media. This announcement may raise eyebrows and spark curiosity, but let me explain the reasons behind this unconventional choice.
Picture a space where likes and comments hold no importance, where validation comes from within, and where real connections flourish beyond the confines of a digital screen. This is the world I aim to embrace as I distance myself from the virtual realm of social media.
I dedicate a significant amount of time to activities I am passionate about, particularly being in natural settings. After returning from a week-long vacation, for which I am grateful, I had some realizations:
Transitioning to fully remote and some in-person coaching
Stepping away from social media
I had been contemplating becoming a content creator and even hiring a video editor to save time and begin producing YouTube content. However, I decided to first assess what consumes my time without benefiting me.
The primary time-consuming factor currently is social media.
Not only does it consume my time, but it also negatively impacts my self-perception and influences what I think I should be doing based on others' actions rather than my own desires. While I have gained some value from it, in recent years, I have unfollowed and muted many individuals whose updates do not resonate with me and have limited my feed to those who inspire me. Yet, gradually, I started following more people, influencers, and businesses, feeling like I am back to square one. So, is social media truly beneficial for my well-being?
Now, I am contemplating, "How can I take this a step further?"
I should simply delete the apps and abandon social media. The idea has been lingering in my mind, but I have not taken any steps to actualize it. Then, a pair of entrepreneurs whom I follow announced their departure from social media and gradual transition of their business away from it.
This made me ponder, if I could leave social media, I would. However, as a business, it might limit opportunities to promote my business and increase revenue. Nonetheless, Instagram seems to drain my energy rather than aid in business growth.
Therefore, my current focus is on learning how to market my products (and future video editing services) WITHOUT social media.
Subsequently, shifting my business away from social media gradually and towards other platforms. I am uncertain about the process, but I anticipate it will take several months. By Quarter 4, ideally, I will no longer be using social media. This way, I can enter 2025 with a clearer mindset.
Presently, here are some steps I need to take to depart from social media (in no particular order):
Explore alternative marketing methods without social media
Inform my clients of my departure from social media and establish a website
Announce my exit from social media to my email list and then social media followers
Abandon Instagram and Facebook
Embracing a More Real Life: Reasons why you and I might consider stepping away from social media
The Burden of Comparison
One of the primary reasons propelling my withdrawal from social media is the constant cycle of comparison. Endlessly scrolling through carefully curated feeds plunged me into a spiral of self-doubt and inadequacy. The highlight reels of others frequently made me question my own achievements and value. It is time to break free from this detrimental pattern and rediscover my true self without the shadow of comparison looming overhead.
Cultivating Authentic Connections
While social media promises connectivity, the relationships formed within its realm often lack depth and sincerity. Numerous likes and comments cannot replace the warmth of a genuine conversation or the joy of shared experiences. By distancing myself from social media, I am paving the way for meaningful, real-life connections that surpass the limitations of a digital platform.
Reclaiming Time and Mindfulness
Hours spent aimlessly scrolling through endless content can quickly accumulate, leaving little space for productivity or self-care. By bidding farewell to social media, I am reclaiming valuable time that can be invested in activities that enrich my life - whether it be pursuing a hobby, reading a book, or simply embracing moments of solitude and mindfulness.
Prioritizing Privacy and Mental Wellbeing
In an age where our every move is documented and shared online, privacy has become a luxury. The constant pressure to maintain a flawless online image can impact mental health, fostering feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. Stepping away from social media enables me to regain my privacy and prioritize my mental wellbeing over virtual validation.
The Path Ahead
As I embark on this journey of digital detox, I am filled with excitement for the experiences that lie beyond the realm of social media. This decision is not a retreat but a leap towards a life enriched with authenticity, connections, and self-discovery.
So, as I bid farewell to the world of likes and filters, I invite you to join me in embracing a life less virtual and more vibrant, where genuine moments take precedence and human connections are treasured.
Let's raise a glass to new beginnings and the adventures awaiting in an unplugged life. The journey begins now.
